Anxiety and Overthinking: How to Break the Cycle

Do you ever feel stuck in a loop of overthinking?

Anxiety and overthinking often go hand in hand. Overthinking can make it hard to make decisions, live in the moment, and can even cause us to dwell on criticism and mistakes.

This constant cycle can increase our anxiety and harm our health and well-being.

❓Why Do We Overthink?❓

▪ Anxiety likely has an evolutionary basis. One can understand how our ancestors a hundred-thousand years ago may have had a survival benefit by being more anxious.

▪ This trait helped them avoid threats and stay safe. They survived – and in doing so – this “anxiety trait” was passed down through generations. Because we don’t have as many life or death situations in our modern lives, this same trait can cause problems for us.

🔸 The Problem with Overthinking🔸

When we overthink, it can lead to decision paralysis, where we find it hard to make any choice at all. It can also make us miss out on enjoying the present moment because we are too busy worrying about the past or future.

How To Manage Overthinking

✅ Practice Mindfulness:

Focus on the present moment. Techniques like deep breathing or meditation can help calm your mind.

✅ Set Time Limits for Decisions

Give yourself a set amount of time to make a decision and stick to it.

✅ Challenge Negative Thoughts

When you catch yourself overthinking, ask if your thoughts are realistic. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones.

✅ Talk to Someone

Sometimes sharing your worries with a friend or therapist can help you see things more clearly.

“Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight.”

– Benjamin Franklin

Remember, you are not alone in dealing with anxiety and overthinking. You can absolutely break the cycle and find peace of mind. Take one step at a time and please be kind to yourself.
