Depression: The Great Deceiver (and How to Fight Back)

As a psychiatrist, I’ve seen how depression can distort our perception of reality. It can make us feel less than we are and blind us to our progress.

I’ve personally experienced these feelings during my own struggles with depression. These emotional states make us believe that hard days or setbacks are permanent and that we will never find happiness again.

In the depths of my despair, I never thought I would be well again.

Depression truly is a great deceiver.

🔸 Challenging the Deception 🔸

⚫ It’s crucial to challenge these thoughts when we’re feeling low. Remember, you have survived 100% of your hardest days.

⚫ Growth often comes from discomfort, even if we can’t see it at the moment. As we start to feel better, we realize how strong we truly are.

🔸 Recognizing Your Strengths 🔸

⚫ It’s important to recognize that you are cared for and loved. Even on the days when you feel invisible, remember there are people who see you, appreciate you, and value you.

⚫ You are already more than enough just as you are. The strength you’ve shown in getting through each day, even when it’s tough, is proof of your resilience. You have the capacity to get better and thrive.

⚫ This dark moment is just that—a moment. It doesn’t define your future. Every step you take, no matter how small, is a testament to your inner strength and potential.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

✅ Medications
These can be helpful – and they work. But they are just one piece of the puzzle.

✅ Therapy
Talking to a professional can provide valuable insights and coping strategies. A combination of therapy and medications yields the best outcomes for depression.

✅ Exercise
Physical activity boosts mood and overall well-being. Think cardio and strength training.

✅ Proper Diet
Eating well supports both physical and mental health. According to Harvard psychiatrist, Dr. Chris Palmer, “The ketogenic diet can actually change neurotransmitters in the brain.”

✅ Meditation
Helps calm the mind and reduce stress. Meditation has been linked to decreased activity in the default mode network – a part of the brain that is linked to unhappiness when overstimulated.

A holistic approach is critical for conquering depression and preventing it from being The Great Deceiver.

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.'”
– Mary Anne Radmacher

You are stronger than you think. This moment may be tough, but it is not forever.

Remember, you are not alone and there is always hope.

Always.
