How Exercise Helps Your Brain As Much As Your Body

Another important association between exercise and brain health has been identified in a new study from the University of Illinois.

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study investigated the pathways through which exercise improves the function of our muscles and further helps enhance brain activity.

Most importantly, it was found – for the very first time – that exercise helped reduce certain blood substances linked to the decline of brain function while increasing other brain-enhancing substances.

This suggests the possible beneficial role exercise plays in maintaining mental acuity as we age.

What you need to know:

🏋‍  Nerve and Muscle Function:
The study founding showed the muscles attached with nerves produced more substances that are useful for the brain the muscles that are not attached with nerves.

💪  Impact of Glutamate on Muscles:
When stimulated by glutamate, these muscles release higher quantities of irisin (a hormone linked to brain health) and extracellular vesicles rich in microRNAs that also support nerve development.

👬  Implications for Aging:
The findings underscore the importance of maintaining neuromuscular health as we age. Preserving these nerve-muscle interactions could be key to sustaining cognitive functions and overall brain health.

Lead author of the study, Professor Hyunjoon Kong, said the findings of this research are very important for elderly individuals and patients with neuromuscular diseases.

This study helps us to further understand why physical activity feels so good.
It also emphasizes the importance of regular exercise, not only for physical fitness, but for mental health as well.

So get out there and exercise! Not only will your body thank you, but now we know your brain will as well!!
