As we approach the end of 2023 and stand on the cusp of a new year, it’s a wonderful moment for introspection. Let’s take stock of our perspectives and beliefs.
How firmly do we hold on to our beliefs?
How open are we to reevaluation and change?
Personally, looking back on my nearly 30 years in psychiatry, I’ve seen many theories pop up and fade out. I’ve observed beliefs in my profession clung to with unwavering – almost fanatical – dedication. We must remember that our so-called truths can quickly change with fresh information.
It’s best to stay humble as we witness these changes.
Ideas that were once critical in any discipline might evolve or disappear over time. We shouldn’t just stick to old beliefs; we need to realize our understanding is always growing. We must continue to improve ourselves through learning, effort and persistence.
Today’s certainties can – and likely will – shift tomorrow.
Think about this for a moment… given enough time, just about everything (if not everything) that man has believed in the past this turned out to be false.
Why would we assume that we are the ones who have it right today?
As we move through our lives, adopting humility is essential. We shouldn’t just dig in our heels but remain open to new insights. Real progress involves adjusting our thinking when presented with new facts.
Embracing humility means acknowledging that what we accept as truth isn’t set in stone. It’s the willingness to pivot, learn, and refine our understanding. Let’s champion an attitude of openness in a world where change is the only constant
It is the only way we truly grow.
